My World, My Opinion…

The People Of MyBlogLog July 6, 2007

I love how MyBlogLog has communities. People seem to behave the same way as people do in real communities. Take an apartment complex, for example. You have your person who goes around tacking up flyers everywhere. In MyBlogLog, that is the person who sends the same message to everyone, “Thanks for stopping by! Be sure to visit my blog at http://www.completeandtotalcrap.com!”. These people are avoided like the plague, since in virtual communities there is no equivalent of opening your door and screaming, “Quit sticking this junk on my door!”.

That person is remarkably similar to the person who wants to be everyone’s friend and insists on talking to you about the weather when you are five minutes late to work. Go away already! It is impossible to be everyone’s friend. Don’t even try. Will you really be able to “do lunch” with 4351 people? Or check out their blogs, for that matter?

Then you have your hotties who hang out at the pool or in the weight room. You know you want to click on them. Here’s one of my favorites:

Thank you Leo Chiang for letting us (well, many of us) drool over your picture!

At any rate, their technique, or so I assume, is to hang out and look good. It never ever hurts to have a good picture! If you do not look like Leo or his female equivalent, Ms. Danielle, perhaps you should consider a picture of a car. Or your cat. Or an electric guitar. Something. Or, like me, you can just not worry about it.

Then there are The Dog People.
These are the only people who go outside when it is raining. They will be out walking their blog at all hours of the blogosphere, regardless of the obligation to be present at work in the morning. Their dedication is inspiring.

There are quite a few dudes who drive big, flashy cars.
Then there are the dudes who want to drive big flashy cars. Like John Chow, and well, you. Keep on monetizing that blog! You’ll get that (insert cool car here) someday.

Of course, being a MyBlogLog user, I had to think of which one of these people I am. I finally figured out that I am that person who looks in other people’s windows. Yikes. I admit, I check out the people in a community, and check out their friends. If you have an awesome blog, be assured that I will be looking in your virtual window to see who else is checking you out. If you’re cool, my reasoning goes, your readers are probably cool as well.

See ya around. Keep those blinds open.

Thanks for stopping by! Be sure to visit my blog at http://www.leochiang.com! ;)
Thanks for the mention and great post, a little window shopping never hurt.

Awesome post! MyBlogLog as an apartment. Brilliant! I’m imagining one of those Richard Scarry (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Scarry) books with a double-page spread showing a cutaway of our lovely communities with our standard cast of characters as cute animated animals.

haha i’m the female equivalent of leo? but you haven’t even seen my chest, i have WAY more tats than that. heehee.. ;)

I love this! Hmm who am I?

I’m the new guy, fresh from a college dorm. I have some experience living on my own, but I really have no idea what the “real world” actually entails. You’ll see me around here and there; I’ll say hi once in a while. But mostly I’m hanging around, trying to figure out how to adapt to this new environment.

Most importantly, you can tell that I’m a nice guy!

Great blog and good analogy. Truth is that we do behave (for the most part) in online communities the same way we behave in and around in our real lives. I put the time in to actually get to know the people whose blogs I visit using MyBlogLog, but I eventually get to a point where I’ve met too many people and I can’t give anyone person enough of my time…ask my friends, they know this behavior too well. What can I say, I have ADD when it comes to meeting new people!!

I love your style! Very clever and witty… I tried to subscribe but got the error message. You might want to check that? Or maybe I am just having an airhead moment. :)

  7. hmmm.. interesting post. I wonder if my picture is good enough.. can you let me know blogGRRL. http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v325/prijap/bday/?action=view&current=1afcb09767e5b2f719a9824e6776b095725.jpg

I think your analogy is excellent. I hate to admit it but I think I fall into the category of wanting to be friends with everyone. I just can’t help it. I love to read and love to discover new blogs and interact with others. However, you are absolutely right. It is impossible to truly be “friends” with everyone.

If you feel like it, you are welcome to look in my windows any time :)
