Life is so much easier now.
Faced with working from 7:30-5:30 five days a week, I accepted that the hours previously spent trying to decipher the WordPress Codex were going to go by the wayside. Not that it really helped. I never questioned my reading comprehension abilities until I tried to teach myself how to alter WordPress templates. Talk about feeling dumb…
I thought about giving up the blog. After all, I had been at it for more than two months and I only had five subscribers showing up in Feedburner.
I suppose I’m a masochist, though. I decided to do the following:
1. Upgrade WordPress to version 2.2.2.2.2 or something like that.
2. Determine for once and for all if Bloggrrl had only 5 subscribers.
3. Switch the blog over from Yahoo to Dreamhost, thus saving myself $13 a month + unlimited hassle.
4. Obtain some working plug-ins, like a contact form and that in-post Adsense thingy.
5. Change things around a bit so that http://www.bloggrrl.com and http://bloggrrl.com are the same thing, stats-wise. This is important for some reason that I can no longer remember.
Okay, I didn’t actually do these things. Jon of ninjaBlog Setup did these things. What’s more, he was able to do a fantastic job even though I emailed him directions very similar to the above. This makes him a mind-reader, and he could probably earn a decent living with one of those 900 fortune-telling hotlines.
Here is an sample of the free services he provides. (Yes, they are totally free! I didn’t pay a cent.)
A Ninja will begin your blog setup including:
* creating a professional email address for your blog (eg. yourname@yourblog.com)
* testing your new email address
* creating WordPress.com account for you so you can use the Akismet Spam protection plugin
* creating a FeedBurner account for you so you can take advantage of FeedBurner stats with your RSS feed
* installing WordPress on your hosting count and domain name
* configure WordPress:
o increase the size of the post writing box – makes writing posts much easier
o setup search engine friendly URLs (permalinks) – more traffic
o add a complete list of services to the ping list – tells various websites every time you write a story
o install a robots.txt file – secures your WordPress admin pages from search engine spiders
o create your user account within WordPress – so you have access to write on and administer your site
o delete the standard links (blogroll) that are included in WordPress
* install and activate over 20 essential WordPress plugins ( see list of plugins )
* setup an automatic WordPress database backup to be delivered weekly via email
* install over 50 theme choices so you can easily change the look and feel of your site (see the themes )
Holy crap, right?
Jon went the extra mile for me, since transferring a domain from Yahoo to Dreamhost is like flying to Cuba from the United States while wearing a Che Guevara t-shirt. My understanding is that Jon’s service is primarily designed for people who have Blogger accounts and who have decided to get their own domains. At any rate, he has the patience of a saint. I mean, I called him at least three times, once freaking out because ProBlogger had linked to me right in the middle of the transfer and my new email wasn’t up yet. Just to make myself even more annoying, while on the phone, I announced to my big rich important pilot neighbor who had just dropped by that, “I am on the phone with my programmer in Canada” because the dude never shuts up about the pilot thing. That’ll show him. I’m important too. I had a programmer at my service! Take that, conceited pilot!
However, here’s the kicker.
I had to give him my Yahoo password so that he could transfer everything and fix the things that needed fixing. I know it is dumb, dumb, dumb to give out your password, especially when it is linked to multiple accounts with all kinds of personal information on them, but being desperate, I did it anyway. And…disaster has not struck. Jon is someone who I trusted with the password to my personal email account, folks. I think it is now safe to say that he is a trustworthy person with whom to do business. It is also safe to say that you should never, ever host a domain with Yahoo because you will have to do the same stupid thing someday if you ever want out of it.
Jon, I hope that you include me as one of your “happy bloggers” on the ninjaBlog Blog!
It is worth noting that Jon also has a down-to-earth, very informative blog called The Art of Moneythat is quite good. Reading his blog, I get the feeling that his advice is as honest as he has proven himself to be.
The best part, though?

Sounds like you got a good foundation setup for a blog now. I’m jealous of your subscriber numbers. Great job! I recommend the myavatars plugin. In the comment field it will put the commentator’s mybloglog picture beside their comment.
Good for you!
366 is AWESOME! Way to go
Call me psychic, but I knew you’d have more than 5 subscribers.
Jon rocks.
Excellent move Michelle – moving away from Yahoo. Even better – letting some one else do all the actual work.
I wonder how your FeedBurner stats went from 5 to 366. Because recently, FeedBurner decreased my blog statistics by 50%! And I have no clue as to why.
I dropped in to their forum to complain and saw that many people have had the same problems recently. Some people had their statistics dropped back to zero! So would love to know how yours went from 5 to 366.
@Rich Minx: Okay, will the guy who teaches upstairs ask me out this year?
@Anke: You’ll have to ask Jon! He worked some voodoo magic with the Feedburner. I have no idea how he did it.
Yahoo! also claims that they will install your wordpress/movable type blog for free, didn’t you try that? if yes, how was it?
@Raj: What that means is that you can do a “one-click install”. In my case, it went all wonky, which is why my blog has /blog141 at the end. That is how many tries it took before it unwonkified itself and installed it! Although they say that they provide you with the latest version, this is not true. Also, according to Jon, it is much more difficult to get plug-ins to work in Yahoo. I was also unable to upload pics directly from the WordPress panel.
I wouldn’t go with a hosting service solely because of an easy install–although, I did, didn’t I? If it weren’t for Jon, I would be about ready to give it up by now–it was a pain in the butt. I have a site over at nearlyfreespeech.net, and I was able to install WordPress myself via FTP (the famous 5-minute install). I am an idiot in these matters, so if I can do it, anyone can. Also, there are other hosting services that also provide the easy install if you really want that. I strongly recommend NOT going with Yahoo. I only did because I’m used to their email, having had it for about ten years now. I’ve moved to Gmail though, and I’m about ready to say “Adios” to Yahoo forever.
NO, don’t give up the BLOG! Well obviously, you’re not going to now.. but just don’t ever consider it again. I like you. I read you. I learn from you.
BTW, next time pilot guy is over.. if you have the time, drive him nuts by asking every little thing you can think of about aeronautics, aviation, etc and just pepper him with asinine questions. As he tries to go out the door, don’t let him.. keep asking. The stupider the question, the better (why do airplanes have TWO wings?) I guarantee it’ll be the last time he talks about that subject with you.
Although I do have a domain for my blog I still have it with blogger…I am terrified of all the warnings I get if I transfer…and I am NOT that computer savvy to figure it out if it all goes awry. But sometimes you have to take risks…glad it worked for you and you were able to find someone you could trust with your blog…oops I mean your password
Thanks for the great write-up Michelle and for making it a great read…it would have been a shame for you not to have a blog that can keep pace with you
@Anke: There are lots of reasons why Feedburner stats can drop and it can be difficult to diagnose exact causes.
If you’re comfortable supplying me with you Feedburner login and password (you can change it when I’m done) I’ll have a look and see if I can figure it out. My contact form.
Jon
You mean he did all that for free?! As in, F_R_E_E_? Boy, i must head over there now. I need some subscribers badly too.
@Costa: F.R.E.E. For real. The only thing is you use a hosting service he recommends. If you do that, he no doubt gets some affiliate bucks. The thing is, the hosting services that he promotes are the GOOD ones, as opposed to the crapalicious Yahoo. I’m really glad I switched–I am hosting multiple domains for about seven bucks a month now. I have a Dreamhost button on my sidebar, but no way can I offer what he does for signing up with them! If I could add that value, I would. He has a good idea.
Cor! That’s huge! If you had a bit of Page Rank you could charge top dollar for your ads!
I’ve never had too many problems with WordPress installations, but being a geek it’s easy for me. (I do install wordpress all day).
Feel I should get a www/non-www redirect thingy. What does your ninja friend recommend doing?
Thank you for the wordpress setup. I add your RSS feed to my reader, interesting blog

Michelle:
Great post with great advice. It’s interesting; about 6 hours before reading your post I opened an account with BlueHost because I’m desperate to leave Blogger and start using WordPress. I see that BlueHost is on Jon’s list. Wish I’d waited because I would have gladly given him the credit based on your referral.
You’re definitely one of the “Charlie Bucket” bloggers out there (see post).
366 way to go. i like the new theme too
hey Michelle… good for you for those subscriber numbers and I am glad you decided to not give up the blog! I have some weird stomach virus today and have been feeling sort of crappy but reading your posts always cheers me up
Although I am on wordpress but I definitely have some questions that I am gonna contact Jon for!
That’s awesome! And what’s even more awesome is your blog. I’m proud to say I’m one of those subscribers. Keep up the great work!

Hey Michelle-
Congratulations! I already have someone managing and hosting for us, but I make all the code adjustments and handle the plug-ins. (Okay, most of them). But once again, I learn some great tips checking you out. Your success is inspiring. And I’m not just being corny. Okay, maybe a little.
Later.

Wow – that is an amazing service.

Wow! You’ve got great information here, and I just keep coming back for more. I was very curious to read your post about wordpress, as I am clueless. I’ve been more desperate to switch my blog to my own domain name, but have been petrified beyond imagination that I’d ultimately be saying worse words than your “Holy Crap” comment above! But, by george I think I may have it now. First I had http://tiddlytwinks.blogspot.com for my blog, but I went got the domain TellinItLikeItIs.net. Using either URL works and will take you to the same site, but I’m still trying to figure out if I’m missing something to make the blogspot.com url roll over to saying my .net address whenever someone visits my blog. Any suggestions out there in cyberspace?????
That’s a pretty intensive treatment. Most of those things seem pretty rudimentary to me, but I definitely appreciated the link to the themes and plugins Ninja Blog provided. I picked up a few I didn’t know about.
