My World, My Opinion…

Writing a Novel Every Month April 3, 2008

Although this blog doesn’t always reflect it, I blog a lot. There are many, many days when I write 15 posts a day. My average word count is around 200 words per post. During February and March, I did this every single day for four straight weeks. That, folks is 84,000 words.

In other words, I could have written a novel.

I’ve been checking out how much romance writers make. It turns out that in most cases, they get more than $1000, which is about how much I made. Of course, you take the risk that people will think your writing sucks, and it has all been for nothing. You also have to be patient, since writers get paid months after their work is accepted.

Since I’m not looking to write the great American novel right now, but rather, make some decent money, the romance genre looks good. It’s formulaic, and there are some great writing tools to use to get ideas. Of course, whenever I do any creative writing, I have to either be drunk or have insomnia, so that might be a bit problematic.

Still, it bears thinking about. Shoot, those NaNoWriMo folks don’t have anything on me! ;-)

  1. I thought about doing this back in October. Thing was, I’d never read a romance novel, so I went to the library to check out some. I couldn’t look the librarian in the eye.

If you’re serious about it, subscribe to Writer’s Market online edition. It’s $4.00 a month, and it’s worth it.

A thousand for 2 months definitley isn’t bad.

But do you really think that making money from blogging will stick around when the industry matures?

I used to use those advertising bars at the bottom of your screen which paid you to surf the web. AllAdvantage was the most popular one.

But they’re all gone now. And so will pay-per-post blogging……. because someone will come up with a program that will blog, without a person, then everyone will have the program, which will drive the price of a post to zero.

$1,000, at $10 per hour, is 100 hours of work.

How much time did it take for you to earn that $1,000?

  3. Michelle Says:

@Adam: The $1000 was made in four weeks, in two hours per day. I type damn fast. 2 hours times 30 days is 60 hours, which amounts to $16.66 an hour. I really enjoy doing it, so it feels like I’m making more. Still, I kinda wish I hadn’t figured out that number.

I agree with you that paid blogging’s time will pass–that’s why I like developing multiple streams of income. :-)

  4. Max Miroff Says:

Blogging can’t really be compared to novel writing because blogs generally have short, concise ideas while novels are long and coherent.

I started blogging to create better writing habits in hopes of “warming up” to write a novel. I don’t have a novel in the works yet and we are pushing three years of blogging. Someday, someday.

I believe that picture above says:

    Man: Let me kiss you.
Woman: No, let me go. I’d rather fall into the water and die already.

I just wandered in here from the “Discover” button in Google Reader (that I only just found). Just wanted to take the minute it takes to say I think your blog is great!
